The Montreal Expos left Canada after the 2004 season to move to the United States (at which time they changed their name to the Washington Nationals). Established as part of Major League Baseball's 1969 expansion, the Expos won a National League East Division title in 1981.
Shocking the Baseball World
In 2011, coming off of a 69-win, losing season, the Nationals turned everything around and won 80 games to finish third in the National League East Division, their highest standing since their arrival in the States. Then in the 2012 season, the Washington Nationals, finished the year with 98 wins—the best record in the league. It was the organization’s second overall playoff appearance and their first since 1981.
