Ever since the early ’80s, Lyle Lovett has been writing and performing songs drenched in Texas twang and country-folk melodies, making him one of the most notable Americana musicians of the last decade. Over the span of his career, Lovett has released 14 albums and 22 singles, including hits like “If I Had A Boat,” “That’s Right (You’re Not From Texas)” and “L.A. County.”
“Writin’ songs is like a mystery,” Lovett told American Songwriter Magazine in 2009. “The most difficult thing to do is have a good idea. If you have a decent idea, the songs are the easy part. Actually having something to say is the hard part. If you get an idea for a song, then it pulls you along. There are just some ideas that you get that are really hard to edit out; it’s hard to stop thinking about some bad ideas. So you just finish it and you end up putting it on a record.” Always a hit with older and more refined country audiences, his 1996 duet with Randy Newman on “You’ve Got A Friend In Me,” the theme song for the beloved Pixar movie Toy Story (and the movie’s two sequels), introduced Lovett to a whole new group of fans.
