Country Music Hall of Famer, Golden Globe winning actor and songwriter of some of the most beloved songs in the American songbook, Kris Kristofferson is a renaissance man of the highest order.
Born in Brownsville, Texas as a military brat, Kris (born Kristoffer) Kristofferson moved around quite a bit before settling in San Mateo, California where he would graduate from high school. A star athlete at Pomona College, Kristofferson was a Lit major who graduated Summa Cum Laude earned a Rhodes scholarship to study at Oxford – where he began writing songs.
Singer, Songwriter, Superstar in all Media
After a distinguished Army career where he earned the rank of Captain, Kris Kristofferson finally got started on a career in music when he moved to Nashville in 1965 and got a job sweeping the floors at Columbia Studios where icons like Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash were recording albums.
Splitting time between Nashville and Louisiana where he worked as a commercial helicopter pilot, Kristofferson wrote such indelible songs as “Me and Bobby McGee,” “Sunday Morning Coming Down” and “Viet Nam Blues,” all recorded by other people. Kristofferson was a hit-writing machine, generating huge songs for the likes of Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and eventually Janis Joplin (with whom Kristofferson was romantically involved), whose version of “Me and Bobby McGee” rose all the way to #1 – but he hadn’t yet made a name for himself as a singer.
Though Kris Kristofferson’s debut album Kristofferson didn’t do huge business, his second release, The Silver Tongued Devil and I is an all-timer. Kristofferson, already a huge success as a songwriter, had finally arrived as a recording star in his own right.
By the mid 1970s and beyond, Kris Kristofferson was working regularly as an actor with such heavyweight directors Sam Peckinpah, Paul Mazursky and Frank Pierson, who directed him to his Golden Globe in A Star is Born. In 1998, Kristofferson introduced himself to a whole new generation in the box office smash hit Blade.
In 1985, Kris Kristofferson joined forces with Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson to form the country music supergroup The Highwaymen, whose first eponymous album went platinum.
