“What makes [Amos] Lee a musical gem—and an icon at his own level—is that you can sense the sincerity in his voice,” TimeOut Chicago wrote in 2011 of the singer/songwriter’s status as a must-watch artist on the rise. Originally from Philadelphia, Lee graduated from University of South Carolina with an English literature degree before deciding to pursue a career in music.
Over the last 10 years, Lee has released five studio albums through the legendary jazz label Blue Note Records, also home to Al Blakey, The Bird And The Bee and Norah Jones, who actually handpicked Lee to open for her in 2004. The funk-folk singer has performed late-night programs like Late Show With David Letterman and The Tonight Show With Jay Leno, and songs like “Colors” and “Sweet Pea” have appeared in various TV shows and movies (i.e. Grey’s Anatomy, Parenthood, Safe Haven). Lee’s most recent album, 2013’s Mountains Of Sorrow, Rivers Of Song, went to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and features guest appearances from Americana artists like Alison Krauss and Patty Griffin. When you see Amos tour this summer, the musician will donate $1 from every ticket to the Musicians On Call non-profit organization, which delivers live and recorded music to patients in hospitals or doing at-home recovery.
