Though most people know Matisyahu by his stage name, which means “Gift Of God,” the Jewish rapper was actually born Matthew Paul Miller and spent much of his teens as a self-proclaimed rebel who would rather listen to Phish than go to shul. However, somewhere around the age of 18, he became interested in making music and that sparked a newfound curiosity about his faith. (He originally started performing under the name MC Truth.)
By the time 2004 rolled around, Matisyahu had grown into his own, on both a religious and musical level: He adopted Hasidism, grew out his beard and payot, and was always seen wearing a yarmulke—even when he performed in and around New York City. (Though never on Fridays, the Sabbath.) Thanks to the alt-friendly song “King Without A Crown,” Matisyahu was able to breakthrough to mainstream audiences on his debut album, Shake Off The Dust… Arise. “Responses to Hebrew prayer chants don't usually involve a crowd screaming woooooo! But when Hasidic reggae sensation Matisyahu does it, people listen, and people throw their arms in the air in rhythm accordingly,” a music critic wrote of the rapper’s performance in a 2006 concert review in The Chicago Tribune. “Matisyahu raptured the crowd with his soul-shaking brand of dancehall reggae, a show that captures both the jam band vibe of Phish and the ska-punk of Sublime.”
In more recent years, Matisyahu has made adjustments to his image and his music. For example, he shaved off his signature beard in 2011. Also, the rapper’s latest album, Ayeka, features more of an EDM-friendly pop sound. However, regardless of how it’s packaged, his message is still clear: Strive for goodness in your life and the lives of others. Who can’t get down with that? ScoreBig can. And with ScoreBig, you save on every Matisyahu ticket, every day.
