Xavier University might not be the nationally recognized institutions of higher learning that it is were it not for the exceptional track record of its basketball program. Located in Cincinnati, Ohio, the Xavier Musketeers have been one of the most successful “mid-major” teams in the country. Every March, you look up and try to fill out that bracket – and you ALWAYS see Xavier in the mix to make some noise in the Big Dance.
Though the school has fewer than 7,000 students and is routinely going head-to-head with Universities several times that size, Xavier is a perennial powerhouse in basketball. After dominating the Atlantic 10 for years (and qualifying for the NCAA tournament 11 of the last 12 years), in 2013-14, the Musketeers join the “new” Big East Conference alongside fellow hoops heavyweights like Georgetown, Marquette and Villanova.
Small School. Big-Time Success
Playing their first official game in 1920, the Xavier Musketeers came to prominence under head coach Pete Gillen who led the team to its first ever victories in the NCAA tournament. Skip Prosser, Thad Matta and Sean Miller were the coaches to follow Gillen and each one took the Musketeers to a new level of national recognition.
Cincinnati native and Xavier alum Chris Mack took the reigns of the program in 2009 and has enjoyed tremendous success in his young tenure. Part of their stellar on-court play should be attributed to how they do off the court in the classroom. Since 1986, Xavier has seen every single player on its men’s basketball team who exhausted his eligibility graduate and get a degree. The school values education, and that’s more than enough reason to support their athletic play.
While competing as members of the Atlantic 10 Conference, Xavier won the conference championship 4 times in 15 years. All this success led Forbes Magazine to rank them as one of the 20 most valuable college basketball programs in the country.
