Founded and designed by Thomas Jefferson, the University of Virginia is one of the best and most beautiful schools on the planet. The Cavaliers, known familiarly as the Wahoos, played their first football season in 1888 and are thought to be one of (if not THE) first schools in the south to adopt the game.
Background
Throughout their long football history, the high point for UVA is generally considered to be the George Welsh era. Coaching the Cavaliers for nearly two decades beginning in 1982, Welsh brought his team to 12 Bowl Games and won more than 80 conference games. Former New York Jets head coach Al Groh succeeded Welsh and with current NFL star Matt Schaub under center, led the Cavaliers to a 3-1 Bowl record.
In addition to Schaub, in recent years UVA has produced some serious NFL talent including Chris Long, Chris Canty, Heath Miller and D’Brickashaw Ferguson.
The Mike London Era
In 2010, former Virginia Defensive Coordinator, Mike London, succeeded Al Groh. Now entering his fourth season at the helm, London has done a tremendous job on the recruiting trail and was named ACC Coach of the Year following the 2011 season. Known for his relentless enthusiasm and energy, Mike London is raising Virginia’s national profile in all the right ways.
