Stockton to Malone Though a decade has passed since they patrolled the court together, John Stockton and Karl Malone are surely as synonymous with the Utah Jazz as any tandem in sports history. Following the 2003 NBA season, John Stockton retired and Karl Malone signed with the Los Angeles Lakers and a new era began for the Utah Jazz. Drafting Deron Williams with the #3 overall pick in the 2005 NBA draft, the Jazz landed a worthy successor to Hall of Famer Stockton. With Carlos Boozer, Paul Milsap and Mehmet Okur down low, the Jazz were a contender once again and made it all the way to the Western Conference Finals where they lost to their longtime rivals, the San Antonio Spurs.
