It’s the dawn of a new age in Storrs as the University of Connecticut Men’s Basketball program emerges from a year of sanctions in the second season under Head Coach Kevin Ollie. Replacing Hall of Fame head coach Jim Calhoun, who stepped down in September 2012, Ollie has massive shoes to fill – but the handpicked successor has already proven his worth, leading UConn to a 20-10 record in his first year and putting together some of the best recruiting classes in years.
During the legendary Calhoun’s quarter-century reign, the Huskies became one of the most dominant NCAA men’s basketball programs in the country, qualifying for the Big Dance in all but four years between 1990 and Calhoun’s retirement in 2012.
Astonishing Success
UConn won the National Championship three times (1999, 2004, 2011) during the Calhoun era and was one of the most prolific pipelines of talent from the college ranks to the NBA. Among many others, the UConn Men’s Basketball program was home to Ray Allen, Richard Hamilton, Caron Butler, Rudy, Gay, Ben Gordon, Emeka Okafor, and most recently, Kemba Walker, now starring for the Charlotte Bobcats, who led the program to a shocking National Championship in 2011.
UConn was a number one seed in the NCAA Tournament a remarkable five times with Calhoun as the coach. They also won the Big East Tournament seven times to go along with 10 Big East regular season titles.
