Porgy and Bess celebrates its influential creators – George and Ira - at the very New York Theater named for them: The Gershwin. This revival of the beloved American folk opera celebrates the adaptation of DuBose Heyward’s novel and subsequent play, Porgy, into the musical sensation it’s known as today. Featuring Gershwin classics, “Summertime,” “It Ain’t Necessarily So,” “Bess, You is My Woman Now,” “I Loves You Porgy,” and “I Got Plenty o’ Nuttin’,” missing this musical revival would be like missing a piece of history.
Drama at Its Best
Set in the fictional Catfish Row in Charleston, South Carolina, Porgy and Bess tells the tale of a disable black beggar, Porgy, who must save the tortured, but beautiful Bess from her scandalous past and abusive ex-lover. In operatic fashion, Porgy and Bess is truly one of the most torrid and exhilarating love stories of all time.
Star-Studded
Porgy and Bess is the collaborative effort of undeniable Broadway talent. Not only was the revival production lead by Tony-nominated director Dian Paulus (Hair), Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks (Topdog/Underdog), and two time Obie Award-winning composer Diedre L. Murray (Running Man), but it features a cast of decorated Broadway veterans including five-time Tony Award winner Audra McDonald (Ragtime), Tony Award nominee Norm Lewis (Les Misérables), and three-time Tony nominee David Alan Grier (Race).
The Love Is Mutual
Porgy and Bess aren’t the only ones in love – the critics have fallen too! Newsday calls Porgy and Bess “A gripping, in-your-face, vibrant revival that bursts with fierce immediacy” and New York Magazine praises, “A gorgeous, transportive theatrical rapture! This incontestably beautiful production kept the audience absolutely rapt, ravished by two hours of one of the greatest scores ever written for the American theatre.”
