The Book of Mormon is the brain child of South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, as well as Avenue Q co-composer, Robert Lopez. The musical extends much of the long-running television show’s signature humor, as well as fascination with Mormonism and break out musical numbers. The Book of Mormon follows the plight of two Mormons sent to Uganda on a church mission. While the missionaries try to promote The Book of Mormon, they find they are unable to reach out to a society stricken by war, famine, poverty, and AIDS. The Book of Mormon Comes to Life The Book of Mormon was first conceived when Scott Rudin, producer of Stone and Parker’s feature-length films, Team America: World Police and South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut, advised the young artists to check out Broadway’s highly-acclaimed Avenue Q. After the production, Parker and Stone met up with Lopez, and the three almost instantly agreed on a Joseph Smith parody. While Stone and Parker may best be known for offensive humor and slapstick comedy, they are no fools when it comes to hard work. The duo, plus Lopez, spent considerable time in Salt Lake City compiling research and interviews with missionaries and ex-missionaries to create – as ironic as it sounds –a true-to-life parody. Parker and Stone Deliver Once Again Scott Rudin was brought on as producer of the show, and The Book of Mormon hit the Eugene O’Neill Theatre on March 24, 2011.
