Known historically for their prowess on the football field and the staggering success of their women’s team in the last two decades the Tennessee Volunteers men’s basketball program has been one of the strongest teams in the SEC. The Volunteers have made the NCAA Tournament 19 times, and though they’ve yet to reach the Final Four, the Cuonzo Martin-led Tennessee squad is trending up in a big way.
Steady Improvement
After a period of sustained success in the late 1970s and early 80s, it was under coach Jerry Green in 1998 that the Volunteers went on a four-year stretch of qualifying for the NCAA Tournament. They won at least 20 games in all four of those years and in 2000 went all the way to the Regional Semifinal, ending the season as the 11th best team in the nation according to the Associated Press.
The Tennessee’s men’s basketball program has a proud tradition built on the legacy of such legendary players as Hall of Fame forward Bernard King, Dale Ellis, former New York Knicks guard Allan Houston, and current Washington Wizards General Manager (and former New York Knicks forward) Ernie Grunfeld.
More recently, thanks to stellar national recruiting by former head coach Bruce Pearl and current coach Martin, the Volunteers have continued to send players on to thrive in the NBA, most notably up-and-coming Orlando Magic forward Tobias Harris and the Brooklyn Nets’ C.J. Watson.
