The establishment of the Detroit Tigers franchise dates all the way back to 1894 when they began playing in the Western League (a minor league that would later become the MLB’s own American League), giving them the distinction of being the oldest continuous single-name, single-city franchise in the AL.
Throughout their history, the Tigers have recorded five seasons with 100+ wins, won the American League Pennant 11 times (with the first being in 1907 and the most recent in 2012), and won the World Series a total of four times (in 1935, 1945, 1968, and 1984).
New Beginnings
From the introduction of divisions within the major league in 1969 up until 1998, the Tigers played in the American League’s Eastern Division. Then in 1998, when the MLB added new expansion teams, divisions were realigned and the Tigers ended up in the Central Division. Two years later the team left Tiger Stadium, which was tied with Fenway Park for being the oldest baseball stadium still in use, in favor of the newer, bigger Comerica Park.
From their new home in the AL Central at Comerica Park, the Tigers have won the division title twice (2011, 2012) and the AL Pennant twice (2006, 2012), but have failed to secure another World Series Championship for the franchise.
