There’s a reason certain tales are told time and time again – because they are effective and appealing, nostalgic and remind us of our youth. One such tale is that of Spider Man, the geeky high school student turned arachnid super hero. Since its comic origins, Spider Man has come to life time and time again in comic book, television, and film form. Now he’s saving the day in the flesh.
Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark: A Rock Musical
Based on the original Stan Lee and Steve Ditko comic, Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark offers everything we all know and love of the original story, including a telling of how Spider Man came to be, his torrid relationship with Mary Jane, and his antagonism with Green Goblin. But the fun doesn’t stop there! On top of the classic tale is rocking jams by U2’s Bono and The Edge, a book by Broadway’s Lion King director, Julie Taymor, and unbelievable technical stunts, including actors swinging from “webs” and daring aerial combat scenes. With so much spectacle, it’s no surprise Spider-Man ranks as the most expensive production in Broadway history.
Defying Genres and Gravity
Spider-Man is unlike any musical production that has come before and can’t fall into any typical category. The Edge describes the show: “It is elements of rock and roll, it's elements of circus, it's elements of opera, [and] of musical theater." Bono refers to it as "pop-up, pop-art opera.” And Julie Taymor calls it a "rock-and-roll circus drama."
Patrick Healy of The New York Times describes Spider-Man as "the most technically complex show ever on Broadway, with 27 aerial sequences of characters flying” as well as “a multitude of moving set pieces that put the audience in the middle of the action.”
