Based on the 1992 comedy film by the same name, the musical, Sister Act, is just as laugh-out-loud funny as what Bravo ranks one of the 100 Funniest Movies. Written by Cherie Steinkellner and Bill Skeinkellner, with music from Disney and Broadway legend Alan Menken, Sister Act was originally a 2009 West End production, which was reinvented as a 2011 Broadway hit. While you won’t catch Whoopi on stage, rest assured that the film’s icon has claimed a stake in the musical as a producer.
The Broadway Revival
After a successful run on London’s West End, a revised version of Sister Act was brought to The Broadway Theatre on April 20, 2011. Both a new director (Douglas Carter Beane) and new book writer (Jerry Zaks, Little Shop of Horrors) were brought on the project and Patina Miller (of the West End production) was asked to reprise her role as Deloris.
Recognition
Sister Act was nominated for 5 Tony Awards and won three: Best Book of a Musical (Cheri Steinkellner, Bill Steinkellner, Douglas Carter Beane), Best Original Score (Alan Menken, Glenn Slater), and Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical (Patina Miller).
Reviews were favorable as well:
“This is a musical that hits all the right spots, achieving something close to Broadway grace.” – The Associated Press
"Big, glitzy numbers are the toast of Broadway musicals. The only thing better? Big, glitzy numbers . . . with nuns! ‘Sister Act’ has plenty of both—and it's one of the season's happiest surprises.” – The New York Post
