One of Major League Baseball’s oldest teams, the San Francisco Giants franchise was established in New York in 1883. They played under the name “Gothams” for two seasons before adopting the Giants moniker that has stayed with the team ever since.
A Dominant Franchise
With so many years of history behind them, the Giants have amassed a truly impressive amount of victories and records. For starters, they have recorded the most wins of any team not only in Major League Baseball, but also of any North American professional sports team, and they have had more Hall of Famers grace their roster than any other MLB team has. In addition, they lead the National League in both pennants won (22) and World Series appearances (19).
Of those 19 World Series appearances, the Giants managed to convert seven into championship titles, putting them second only to the St. Louis Cardinals in the NL. Five of those World Championships were won while the team was still on the East Coast (in 1905, 1921, 1922, 1933, and 1954) while the two most recent were won in San Francisco in 2010 and 2012.
