The San Diego Padres, a formidable force in the MLB’s National League Western Division, were established in a 1969 expansion that also included the Washington Nationals, the Kansas City Royals, and the Milwaukee Brewers. The Padres are one of two teams in baseball history to have originated in the state of California (the other being the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim), and they are much beloved by their Southern California fan base.
