A perennial Super Bowl favorite for the much of the last decade, the San Diego Chargers are flying under the radar in 2013 and maybe that's right where they need to be. With a new GM, a new coach and an infusion of both savvy vets and promising rookies, the Chargers get a fresh start in the wide-open AFC West. Just three years removed from a 13-3 campaign, four-time Pro Bowl QB Philip Rivers is anxious to get back to his winning ways.
History
One of the charter members of the AFL in 1960, the San Diego Chargers were founded by Barron Hilton, the scion of the Hilton Hotels empire. Playing one season at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the Chargers moved to San Diego in 1961 and have been a fixture in the city ever since. Playing their home games at Qualcomm Stadium, site of three Super Bowls, since 1967, the Bolts are the subject of constant speculation as to their future. Will they be forced to move up the 5 to Los Angeles? Will the city of San Diego finance a new stadium? The long-term future is up in the air, but Bolts fans will do everything they can to keep their beloved team in beautiful San Diego.
A New Era in San Diego
After six seasons and three playoff appearances under offensive wizard Norv Turner (who is now the Offensive Coordinator in Cleveland), young gun Mike McCoy takes the reigns in San Diego after a meteoric rise through the coaching ranks. Most recently the Offensive Coordinator for the Denver Broncos one of the Chargers' fiercest rivals, McCoy and new play-caller Ken Whisenhunt bring a new philosophy to the 2013 Chargers that hopes to capitalize on the immense natural talents of Rivers and his key offensive weapons. In addition to much-needed productivity out of rookie WR Keenan Allen out of California, if Antonio Gates and Ryan Mathews can stay healthy and the rebuilt line can keep Rivers on his feet, the Chargers should have one of the most explosive offenses in the NFL.
On defense, the Chargers feature one of the most famous rookies in the history of the NFL. Former Notre Dame superstar Manti Te'o looks to put the “catfish” scandal behind him and make headlines for what he does on the field. With Dwight Freeney coming over from the Indianapolis Colts, the Chargers have everything they need to get after opposing quarterbacks.
