Rod Stewart was born in 1945 in North London, England. Growing up with ambitions of playing professional soccer, he did not develop an earnest interest in music until around 1959. Stewart then got his first gig as a professional musician in 1963 when he joined The Dimensions, who later became Jimmy Powell & the 5 Dimensions, as a part-time singer and harmonica player, and he then quit his day job the following year to perform with the Hoochie Coochie Men. He continued to play with a few local bands until he joined the Jeff Beck Group as the lead vocalist in 1967, and it was with the Jeff Beck Group that Stewart gained the notoriety and momentum to launch his solo career. He signed with Mercury Records in 1968, and in 1969, Stewart released his first solo album in addition to taking on a new group project, Faces. Working concurrently on his solo career and with the Faces, Rod Stewart earned his place as a household name.
