Some might say Sweden is best known for three major things: Ikea, meatballs and pop music. Speaking of Swedish pop imports, it doesn’t get more experimental and cutting edge than singer Lykke Li, who has been hypnotizing audiences with her signature synth-pop melodies and stunning visuals since the release of her debut, Youth Novels, in 2008. Only 22 when the album came out, Li took some time to find her footing on-stage, but it wasn’t long until she started to gain equal recognition for her artsy performances. “Casting a spell over her audience with her sweet, fragile voice and holding a glittering purple tambourine, she sings, whispers, squeaks, hiccups and coos from behind a curtain of long blond hair,” a writer said of Li’s stage presence in 2008 for a feature in England’s The Independent. “Both self-contained and wild, she indulges in crazed bouts of head-banging reminiscent of Meat Loaf, before stretching out her arms, grabbing at nothing except strong emotion, like a young Kate Bush.” Lykki Li went on to follow-up her debut with 2011’s Wounded Rhymes, which she wrote and recorded over a six-month stay in Echo Park, California, and featured songs like “Youth Knows No Pain” and “Get Some.” It would be another two-and-a-half years, though, before Li would release her third album, 2014’s I Never Learn, which was heavily inspired by a recent romantic break-up and, again, was written and recorded in California. Though, this time, she called Los Angeles home during the production. “I made no such plans to make an album,” Li admitted to Billboard.com. “My first instinct was just to try to heal myself and to come back to some sort of life. And then I was so emotionally broken that I just started to write... I love writing, and it was so amazing to get lost in the process. I didn't think that someone would ever hear it.” It’s crazy to think something so pretty can come from so much pain (i.e. songs like “No Rest For The Wicked” and “Love Me Like I’m Not Made Of Stone”), but that just speaks to Li’s singing/songwriting talent.
