Founded in 1933 as the Pittsburgh Pirates – named after the baseball team, as was customary at the time – the Pittsburgh Steelers have been controlled by the Rooney Family for almost their entire history and are one of the flagship franchises in the NFL. A Steel City Original The oldest franchise in the AFC, the Pittsburgh Steelers struggled throughout much of their early history but since Chuck Noll took the reigns in 1969, the Steelers have been the most consistently successful franchise in the NFL. Led by the fearsome “Steel Curtain” (headlined by “Mean” Joe Greene” and quarterback Terry Bradshaw, the Steelers dominated the 1970s, by winning four Super Bowls. In 1992, Bill Cowher took over where Chuck Noll had left off and brought the Pittsburgh Steelers to two Super Bowls, winning in 2005 with the type of stout defense and smash-mouth football that embodies the rough and tumble spirit of Western Pennsylvania. After a 15-year run, Cowher gave way to Mike Tomlin in 2007. One of the youngest coaches in history, Tomlin led the Steelers to their second Super Bowl victory of the decade and sixth overall. After missing the playoff in 2012 due in large part to a huge number of injuries, the Pittsburgh Steelers are out for redemption in 2013. Two-time Super Bowl winner Ben Roethlisberger leads a young, rising offense and on defense Pittsburgh features Troy Polamalu, a future Hall-of-Famer who, when healthy, is one of the best to ever lace ‘em up. Cool Fact: During WWII, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Philadelphia Eagles merged their operations due to a player shortage. The team's name for the 1943 season? The Steagles. They went 5-4-1.
