Founded in 1890, the Pittsburgh Panthers are among the must successful and innovative football programs in the history of the college game. Enjoying historic (though currently dormant) rivalries with the Penn State Nittany Lions and the West Virginia Mountaineers (with whom they contest The Backyard Brawl), the Pitt Panthers were the first team to put numbers on jerseys, the first team to produce a live radio broadcast (1921) and the first program to air a nationwide live television broadcast (1951). Opening the season against the highly regarded Florida State Seminoles at Heinz Field, the Pitt Panthers also play host to New Mexico, UVA and ODU, the Fighting Irish, UNC and the Miami Hurricanes. Through the years, the Pitt Panther program has produced some of the best-known players in NFL history. From Mike Ditka to Tony Dorsett to Dan Marino to Larry Fitzgerald and Darrelle Revis, the Panther legacy in football lore is secure. 2013. A New Era Begins in the ACC In his second season since taking over for Pitt alum Dave Wannstedt, Paul Chryst ushers the Panthers into the ACC after three decades in the Big East. In 2012, after a tough start, the Panthers came down the stretch with big wins over Virginia Tech and Rutgers to earn a bid to the BBVA Compass Bowl. Though they’ll have to replace Ray Graham, a highly productive running back now trying to make it in the NFL, the Panthers return nine starters on an elite defense and Tom Savage is back for a make or break senior year. In Devin Street, a lightning-quick receiver poised for a breakout season and Isaac Bennett powering the run game, Savage has the weapons he needs to make some noise in the ACC.
