A Brief History The Phoenix Suns began play in the NBA in 1968 as an expansion team alongside the Milwaukee Bucks. Founded by a group of local businessmen, the Suns were the first professional sports franchise to establish roots in Phoenix, then a relatively small market critics claimed wouldn’t support a team. The gamble, obviously, was a good one as Phoenix has been among the fastest growing cities in the United States in the past half century. Today the Suns share the sports landscape with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Cardinals and Coyotes and Phoenix is the sixth largest city in the country. Though the franchise is still seeking a first NBA title, the Suns have won two Conference championships and own one of the league’s best all-time winning percentages. Through the decades, the team has featured All-Stars from Kevin Johnson and Dan Majerle to Amare Stoudamire and Joe Johnson plus a few all-time NBA greats in Charles Barkley and Steve Nash and Shaquille O’Neal. A New Era Begins Since purchasing the Phoenix Suns from Arizona sports icon Jerry Colangelo in 2004, Robert Sarver has proven his willingness to dream big. In the first years of Sarver’s era, the Suns signed Steve Nash to run Mike D’Antoni’s fast-paced offense and the results were sensational. In the 2004-05 season the Suns (in the first of Nash’s 2 MVP campaigns) lit up scoreboards around the NBA and went 62-20 before bowing to the San Antonio Spurs in the Conference Finals. In the summer of 2013, Sarver hit the refresh button for his franchise. Starting in the executive suite, Sarver brought in one of the Celtics key talent evaluators in Ryan McDonough. One of the brightest young minds in the game, McDonough proceeded to hire former Suns star Jeff Hornacek to coach the team and then got to work on the roster. Though it will certainly take time to rebuild the organization, McDonough has already given the Phoenix faithful a new face of the franchise. Dealing fan favorite Jared Dudley to the LA Clippers, the Suns got Eric Bledsoe in return and immediately established a defense-first mentality. One of the league’s budding stars, Bledsoe will team with rookies Alex Len and Archie Goodwin to form one of the most exciting young cores in the league. Ball Night in Phoenix In the heart of the hopping entertainment district in downtown Phoenix, the Suns play in US Airways Center. Opened in 1992, the arena has hosted two NBA All-Star Games, tons of NCAA tournament games and the biggest concerts and events in region.
