Despite being a consistent playoff participant throughout their history, the Philadelphia Flyers haven’t won the Stanley Cup in almost 40 years. GM Paul Holmgren has been aggressive in the last few years and the team should have everything they need to contend in 2014-15. A Brief History Coming into the NHL as part of the first expansion period in 1967, the Philadelphia Flyers were the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup in 1974. Since repeating the feat in 1975, the Flyers have played in six additional Stanley Cup Finals (most recently in 2010) but have lost each time. In one of the most passionate sports markets in the country, the Flyers have built a huge, dedicated (and emotional) fan base and have been a regular post-season participant. Among a long list of all-time great Flyers are players like Bobby Clarke, Bernie Parent, Mark Howe and Eric Lindros. 2013-14 After missing the playoffs in the lockout-shortened season a year ago, the Philadelphia Flyers are all-in in 2013-14. Signing Claude Giroux and Sean Couturier to extensions and bringing in savvy vets including Vincent Lecavalier and former Blackhawks goalie Ray Emery, the Flyers are deeper and more dangerous heading into the new season. With some of the top young wings in the NHL including Jakub Voracek, Wayne Simmonds and Matt Read, the Flyers expect the explosive Giroux and veteran Lecavalier to lead by example and put up huge scoring years. The Flyers will also need big time production from the Schenn brothers (Luke and Brayden) and Sean Couterier. Will they have enough to make a run in the Stanley Cup playoffs? Only time will tell. Save on Philadelphia Flyers Tickets Steps away from both Lincoln Financial Field, home of the Eagles AND the Phillies’ Citizens Bank Park, the Flyers and Sixers share the Wells Fargo Center. Opened in 1996 to replace the beloved Spectrum, the Flyers enjoy a massive home-ice advantage. From the moment the opposing line-up is announced at Wells Fargo Center, you know you can ONLY be in Philadelphia. Passionate Philly fans do their very best to ensure visiting players are as uncomfortable as possible. Get in on the action with ScoreBig. You’ll save on every ticket, every day.
