The Notre Dame Fighting Irish have always been known for their football program. With famed coaches like Knute Rockne, Ara Parseghian and Lou Holtz, a groundbreaking national television deal with NBC and a long list of stars in the NFL, Notre Dame is the most famous football brand in on the planet.
While the basketball program may not enjoy the same level of international fame as the football team, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish are a top-ten all-time basketball institution in terms of total wins and NCAA tournament bids. Despite the fact that Notre Dame were named National Champions in 1927 and 1934, their most famous win came on January 19th, 1974, when they beat John Wooden’s UCLA Bruins to end an astonishing 88-game win streak.
They went through a 19 season run under head coach Digger Phelps (1971-1991) that saw 14 NCAA Tournament appearances and a Final Four showing in 1979. But in the subsequent years after Phelps left (1992 to 2000), the Fighting Irish failed to qualify for the Tournament once as they shifted from being an Independent team to becoming a member of the Big East.
The Mike Brey Era
Mike Brey was hired as Notre Dame’s head coach in 2000 after Matt Doherty’s abrupt exit for UNC. In his tenure, Brey has been one of the most consistently productive coaches in the NCAA, leading the Fighting Irish to nine NCAA tournament appearances and one Sweet Sixteen (2002). For his efforts in the brutally competitive Big East Conference, Brey was named Big East Coach of the Year three times.
Formally joining the ACC on July 1, 2013, Notre Dame fans will get to see some of the most powerful basketball brands in the country on a regular basis. Facing off against the likes of Duke, North Carolina and Syracuse, the Fighting Irish will have their hands full, but come tournament time, you better believe they’ll be battle-tested.
