Northwestern University is a school known for its journalism school and overall academic standing. In 107 seasons of organized play, the men’s basketball team has never qualified for the NCAA Tournament. They are the only school from a BCS conference that can make that inauspicious claim.
There have been some high points through the years, make no mistake. As recently as the 2009-2010 season, the Wildcats ranked in the AP Top 25 poll for the first time since 1969, and in the 2011-2012 season, they defeated Michigan State in a tough Big Ten regular season matchup. Four straight NIT bids followed by a 13-19 mark in 2012-13 were enough for the administration to make a change.
A New Hope
With a new season arrives new hope on Chicago’s North Side. Replacing coach Bill Carmody his 13 year reign at Welsh-Ryan Arena is one-time Mr. Basketball in Illinois, Chris Collins. The son of coaching legend Doug Collins, Chris Collins comes to Evanston after apprenticing under Mike Krzyzewski at Duke since 2000.
Operating the Princeton offense under Carmody, Chris Collins brings a hard-nosed, attacking philosophy to the Northwestern Wildcats. A renowned recruiter with strong ties to the hoops-hotbed of Chicago, Northwestern fans have to be fired up for the Chris Collins era.
Fighting For an NCAA Tournament Bid
Playing their conference ball in the powerful Big Ten conference, the Wildcats battle the likes of Michigan State, Ohio State, and the resurgent Michigan Wolverines, who made it all the way to the National Championship game last season. Despite the odds and the history, however, there’s widespread optimism in Evanston heading into the 2013-14 campaign.
