With a new name, a new owner and all kinds of new talent, the New Orleans Pelicans enter the 2013-14 season as one of the most exciting franchises in the NBA.With Anthony Davis, Jrue Holiday, Eric Gordon and Tyreke Evans forming one of the most explosive quartets in the league, a new day is dawning in the Crescent City. A Brief History The Pelicans (fka Hornets) arrived in New Orleans prior to the 2002-03 season after a decade and a half in Charlotte where they featured stars Larry Johnson, Glen Rice, Alonzo Mourning and Baron Davis. Prior to the team’s arrival, New Orleans had not had a professional basketball team since the Jazz left in 1979. (We can hopefully all agree that the “Jazz” is a name much more organic to New Orleans than Salt Lake City… but we digress.) While the franchise was forced to play in Oklahoma City in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina for two seasons and was controlled by the league for a stretch, Saints owner Tom Benson stepped in in 2012 and brought much appreciated stability to the franchise. With a young and hungry roster, New Orleans Pelicans season ticket sales are through the roof as pundits anticipate a breakthrough season. The host of many NCAA tournament finals, College Football Championship Games, Super Bowls and so on, New Orleans is clearly one of the sports meccas in the United States. The Future is Now By drafting Anthony Davis out of the University of Kentucky in 2012, the Pelicans not only gained a defensive wizard with massive upside, they also brought in the face of the franchise. In a 2013 draft shocker, the Pelicans selected Nerlens Noel and immediately shipped him to Philadelphia in a package to acquire dynamic young point guard Jrue Holiday. Coming of his first All-Star appearance, Holiday is a rising star who will team with Eric Gordon and newly acquired Tyreke Evans (a former Rookie of the Year) to form one of the most dynamic backcourts in the league. And if Austin Rivers can shake off a disappointing rookie campaign and live up to his immense potential, the Pelicans will be absolutely loaded. With all kinds of explosive young talent and a brand new attitude, the Pelicans are seeking the franchise’s first playoff berth for the first time since 2011. Ball Night in The Big Easy It’s been empirically proven that there is NO WAY to have anything less than a fantastic time in New Orleans. Honestly – the place is built for your entertainment.
