A Decorated Past
The Michigan State Spartans Men’s Hockey program was formed in in 1922. After intermittent success (including the 1966 Championship) in their first half century, legendary coach Ron Mason turned the program into a national powerhouse. Until Boston College’s Jerry York recently passed him, Ron Mason was the all-time winningest coach in NCAA Division I Hockey.
He also coached the team to a conference-record 10 Central Collegiate Hockey Association tournament titles (they even named the championship trophy after him in 2000) and one national championship.
In total, the Spartans have earned bids to the NCAA tournament a total of 23 times, with three of those appearances ending in national titles (in 1966, 1986, and 2007). The team has also developed and turned out more than 60 current and former NHL players and Olympians, including Justin Abdelkader, David Booth, Mike Donnelly, and Drew and Ryan Miller.
