At the University of Maryland, every home game feels like March Madness. With a 4,000 member student section including “The Wall” on the western end of the Comcast Center, the Terps enjoy one of the best home court advantages in the country. In 2002, the Terrapins went on a memorable 32-4 season that culminated with a National Championship, their first and only one in school history. It was the type of win that established Maryland as one of the best programs in college basketball, and they’ve yet to look back. Huge Shoes to Fill Taking over the University of Maryland basketball program in 1989 after stints at Ohio State and Boston College, Gary Williams quickly established himself as one of the college game’s very best. After making the Sweet Sixteen in the 1994 NCAA Tournament (their first berth since 1988), Williams and the Terps went on an astonishing 10-year run highlighted by the 2002 National Championship that made College Park a true hoops hotbed. Producing NBA stars Joe Smith, Steve Francis, Steve Blake and many others, the University was able to construct the state-of-the-art Comcast Center, often referred to as “The House that Gary Built.” Following the legend’s retirement in 2011, the University of Maryland brought in Mark Turgeon following his successful stint at Texas A&M. While Turgeon has yet to take the Terps to the Big Dance, there’s plenty of reason for optimism in College Park. With one of the best coaching staffs in the country scouring the country for top recruits and building on the Terrapin legacy, the future for Terps fans is very bright indeed. The End of an Era Charter members of the ACC in 1953, the Maryland Terrapins will play their final season the conference in 2013-14 before a move to the Big Ten. Historic rivalries with Duke, UNC and other traditional ACC powers will be replaced by annual matchups against the likes of Indiana University, Michigan and Michigan State. Save on Maryland Terrapins Men’s Basketball Tickets But before the big move, the Terps and Mark Turgeon will get a swan song in a conference many pundits argue has a chance to be the best of all time. After losing Alex Len to the NBA, the University of Maryland has big holes to fill, but Turgeon and his staff are rebuilding a program that will compete for years to come.
