Since the dawning of his career in the late 1960’s, James Taylor’s songwriting abilities have led him to the top of the charts countless times. “Fire and Rain,” a tune that can be heard on more movie soundtracks than possibly any other song ever written, is one for the books. Rolling Stone magazine agrees, having ranked it 227 on their list of top 500 songs of all time. And it doesn’t stop there; he has also managed to win five Grammy awards and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000.
What many don’t know is that Taylor was the first non-British act to be signed to Apple Records, a label founded by the Beatles and splashed across record cases of the greatest talents of the time. It was during this homesick period in England that he wrote “Carolina in My Mind.” After returning to America, he headlined The Troubadour in Los Angeles, had some unfortunate experiences in rehabilitation centers, and gained himself a couple of broken hands and feet in a motorcycle accident. All the while he was writing some of the most beloved songs of the latter part of the 20th century. “You’ve Got a Friend,” written originally by Carole King, remains a classic next to his “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight,” “Mexico,” and “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You).” While we guitar enthusiasts struggle over his seemingly effortless tablature, Art Garfunkel warms up to James Taylor before every performance, confessing to Rolling Stone, “Some people have a hard time with the self-consciousness of perfectionism. But I think "perfect" is the best review.” He takes a minute to explain where and why he wrote each song before serenading his audience, and has been signing autographs during intermission on his recent tour, so be sure get a seat up front!
