Houston Astros vs. Seattle Mariners

Despite never having won a World Series championship, the Houston Astros have been fortunate enough to have some of the most unforgettable and impressive players in all of Major League Baseball on their team. From the era of Jeff Bagwell (1994 NL MVP and four-time All Star) and Craig Biggio (member of the 3,000 hit club and seven-time All Star) to Nolan Ryan staking claim as one of the most legendary figures of all time, there is no denying the talent that has worn the Astros jersey.  But not to live in the past, the Astros are leaving the National League’s Central Division and moving forward to begin play in the American League’s West Division, with the switch effective starting in the 2013 season. Facing new competition with a fresh start, the Astros are in a perfect position to be in contention for their first World Series title. No Strangers to Adversity Houston’s interest in bringing a professional baseball team to the city dates back at least 10 years prior to the Astros’s existence. And while the MLB refused to consider granting Texas an expansion team, a group of four prominent Houston men refused to give up. They recruited potential owners from other teams to create the Continental League, a third league to compete against the previously established MLB National and American Leagues. Feeling threatened by this added competition, both the NL and the AL expanded from 8 teams to 10, and the Houston Colt .45s (who changed their name three years later when they moved into the Astrodome) were welcomed into the National League. The Continental League disbanded before a single game was played.
