While we all know and love the film version starring her highness, Madonna, and swoon-worthy Antonio Banderas, most of us missed the original 1979 Broadway version of Evita, starring Broadway big shots, Patti LuPone and Mandy Patinkin and directed by the one-and-only Harold Prince. Fortunately, the heart-wrenching tale of Eva Perón has returned to Broadway’s Marquis Theatre as a triumphant revival, called “a modern masterpiece!” by The New York Post. “A New Argentina” The revival features Elena Roger in the title role and Ricky Martin as Che. The dynamic duo belts out Andrew Lloyd Webber’s music and Tim Rice’s lyrics with acclaimed ease.  Numerous touring productions have all managed to capture the essence, not only of Roger and Martin’s performance, but of the original 1979 production. This 2012 revival was not only nominated for three Tony Awards, including Best Musical Revival, but it broke the Marquis Theatre Box Office record seven times. Nathan Heller, of Vogue Magazine, described the Broadway classic’s reimagining as: “sumptuous, elegant, and breathtakingly romantic.” The Musical’s Origins The seeds of Evita were planted early on – on Tim Rice’s childhood stamp collection, to be exact. Eva Perón’s image fascinated him, as did a radio show about her, which he caught the tail end of many years later. Rice did intensive research on Perón, including travelling to Buenos Aires to investigate the many aspects of her life. The famous lyricist even named his first daughter after Eva. Rice approached Andrew Lloyd Webber with a musical concept based on Perón’s life, and Webber was immediately inspired by the idea of composing tangos, pasos dobles, and Latin stylings. Thus, Evita was born.
