Founded as the Portsmouth (Ohio) Spartans in 1929, the Detroit Lions are one of the oldest professional football franchises still playing on Sundays. With four NFL championships, the Lions are due for a golden age. With one of the best QB-WR combinations in the league and a strong desire to prove that last season's 4-12 mark was an aberration; the Detroit Lions are poised for a breakthrough in 2013.
A New Era
In his first three seasons at the helm, Jim Schwartz won two, six, then 10 games—a total that was good enough to garner the team's first playoff appearance since 1999. 2012 was a step backwards, but if young defensive tackle Nick Fairley's Super Bowl predictions are to be believed, the Lions have a big season in store in 2013.
Though the Lions may never find a replacement for all-timer Barry Sanders, the 2013 team added Reggie Bush to balance the passing-attack and with Nick Fairley and Ndamukong Suh dominating on defense and joined by rookie phenom Ziggy Ansah, the Lions of playmakers all over the field.
An NFC North Contender
While the NFC North offers some stiff competition with the rebuilt Chicago Bears, the offensive powerhouse Green Bay Packers and the Adrian Peterson-led Minnesota Vikings, the Detroit Lions have at least one thing no other NFL team has: Calvin Johnson. The Wide Receiver known as Megatron is making a case to be considered the best player at his position in the history of the NFL.
Did You Know…
The Motown soul legend Marvin Gaye tried out for the Lions in 1970, even gaining weight in preparation. He was cut early in the process.
