With five Super Bowl appearances and two dramatic championship seasons, John Elway goes down as one of the best clutch performers in the history of the game. Now leading his beloved Denver Broncos from the executive suite, Elway is building a contender once again.
A New Order in Mile High
After a Hall-of-Fame career in Indianapolis followed by a season spent recovering from four neck surgeries, no one knew quite what to expect when Peyton Manning headed to the Rocky Mountains to lead the Denver Broncos. Would he be able to throw deep? Could he take a hit? Would he be healthy enough to take the Broncos back to the playoffs?
The answers? Yes, yes and YES. In his first season in Denver, Peyton Manning was as good as ever – slicing up the competition en route to a 13-3 record and a Pro Bowl season. After losing to the eventual Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens in the playoffs, the Broncos are reloaded in 2013. Adding longtime Patriots receiver Wes Welker to the mix gives Manning a powerful weapon in the slot with stars Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker on the outside. The Offensive Line is as good as it gets in the NFL and though Willis McGahee has moved on, rookie Montee Ball will get a shot to become the kind of power runner he was at the University of Wisconsin.
After a freak deadline snafu with a fax machine, Elvis Dumervil was forced to sign with the Ravens but with Von Miller and Champ Bailey anchoring the defense and welcoming new additions Shaun Phillips and rookie Sylvester Williams, the Broncos have what looks to be the most talented roster in the league.
