With music that sparkles and a playful libretto, Washington National Opera's production of Donizetti's comedy is utterly charming. Handsome Nemorino is mad for the feisty Adina. She doesn't know he exists, but he'll do anything to get her to fall in love with him. Enter the lovable quack Dr. Dulcamara, who provides Nemorino with a "magic" potion -- the elixir of the title -- that sweeps up the lovers in a comically romantic whirlwind. Filled with whimsical wit, beautiful arias and intoxicating duets, the opera is sung in Italian with projected English titles.
