In the 1970s, Chicago started out as an experimental rock ’n’ roll band out on a political mission, but with the unexpected success of ballads like “If You Leave Me Know” and “You’re The Inspiration,” the septet shifted its focus towards a softer sound. Ultimately, the group made the right choice and, over the years, became one of the world’s best-selling bands of all time, having sold more than a 100 million records. (Other artists in the 100-million club include Britney Spears, Eminem, Prince and The Who.)
“I think that the original appeal of Chicago, especially the first half-dozen albums, is that it wasn’t all the same genre, because of the different writers and each of us having different influences,” keyboardist/vocalist Robert Lamm told UltimateClassicRock.com back in 2012. “So you weren’t listening to two sides of just blues, you were listening to a lot of different things. I think that now that we have the freedom, that we don’t have to do an album full of power ballads—we certainly could do a power ballad if we wanted to—but now we can do anything that we want to.”
Chicago has been releasing self-titled albums since the beginning of their career and their latest, Chicago XXXVI, is scheduled to come out July 2014. Hear it live this year, With ScoreBig, you’ll save on every Chicago ticket, every day.
