When James Mercer, frontman of beloved indie-rock band The Shins, first announced he’d be taking a break from his full-time gig to start a side project with famed hip-hop producer Danger Mouse, fans were taken a little off-guard. However, when they heard the result—Broken Bells’ 2010 self-titled debut—everything suddenly made sense and the record quickly became an instant space-rock classic. “It turns out the two pop-science geeks are a perfect match,” Rolling Stone noted in a glowing review of the release. “Danger Mouse pushes Mercer's gorgeous, existential tune craft outward with Day-Glo dynamics.” Standout songs include “The High Road,” an ambient sonic journey through what it’s like to feel lost and abandoned, and “The Ghost Inside,” a falsetto-fueled romp with retro instrumentation. The pair followed up their debut with the 2011 EP, Meyrin Fields, before releasing their sophomore album, After The Disco, in February 2014.
