With 17 NBA championships and 21 conference titles, the Boston Celtics are the most successful team in history of the NBA. Here's what you can expect for next season.
Founded in 1946, the Celtics have been one of the cornerstone franchises of the league and, alongside the Red Sox, Bruins and Patriots an enormous source of civic pride for the city of Boston. Wearing their iconic, brilliantly simple green and white uniforms festooned with a shamrock, the Celtics are one of the most recognizable sporting brands on the planet.
Celtic Pride
Dominating the league with an unprecedented and unsurpassed 8 consecutive championships (and 9 of 10) from 1959-66, the Boston Celtics were led by legendary coach and basketball pioneer Red Auerbach and by Bill Russell and Bob Cousy, two of the greatest players of all-time.
After adding two more banners to the rafters of the Boston Garden in the 1970s propelled by a couple of future Hall-of-Famers in Dave Cowens and John Havlicek, the Boston Celtics orchestrated a coup by selecting Larry Bird out of Indiana State. Together with Kevin McHale and Robert Parish – the greatest front line in NBA history - Bird would help build another dynasty in Beantown with three more championship seasons in the 1980s.
After some down years, Celtic all-timer Danny Ainge returned to the organization as General Manager and rebuilt the team around Paul Pierce. In the 2007 off-season, Ainge and coach Doc Rivers stunned the league by trading for Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen and overnight the Celtics were a championship contender once again. With the electrifying Rajon Rondo running the floor for the new Big 3, the Boston Celtics won title number 17 in 2008.
