With 17 NBA championships and 21 conference titles, the Boston Celtics are the most successful team in the history of the NBA. Founded in 1946, the Celtics have been one of the cornerstone franchises of the league and, alongside the Red Sox, Bruins and Patriots an enormous source of civic pride for the city of Boston. Wearing their iconic, brilliantly simple green and white uniforms festooned with a shamrock, the Celtics are one of the most recognizable sporting brands on the planet. Celtic Pride Dominating the league with an unprecedented and unsurpassed 8 consecutive championships (and 9 of 10) from 1959-66, the Boston Celtics were led by legendary coach and basketball pioneer Red Auerbach and by Bill Russell and Bob Cousy, two of the greatest players of all-time. A New Era Begins Following a 6th straight playoff appearance (a loss to the New York Knicks in the first round), the Boston Celtics hit the reset button. With long-tenured coach Doc Rivers moving across the country to take over the Los Angeles Clippers, the Celtics shipped Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Jason Terry to Brooklyn in exchange for a group featuring Gerald Wallace, Kris Humphries and a truckload of draft picks. In order to replace Doc Rivers, Danny Ainge went out and talked one of college basketball's hottest coaching prospects, Brad Stephens, into the NBA. After phenomenal success at Butler University, Stephens takes charge of the historic franchise in a period of flux. While Ainge refuses to call this a rebuilding process, the Celtics will lean heavily on superstar Rajon Rondo (coming off knee surgery) to bring this group together.
