The Baltimore Orioles, who were known as the Milwaukee Brewers at the time of their establishment, were one of the eight original charter franchises of Major League Baseball's American League when it was founded in 1901. They spent just a single season in Wisconsin as the Brewers before moving to St. Louis, where they took the name the Browns and stayed until 1953.
During the St. Louis era, the team is perhaps most well-remembered for winning the franchise’s first American League Pennant in 1944. Then they relocated once more, this time to their current home in Baltimore, Maryland. In comparison to the various other relocations that occurred throughout the 1950s in the MLB (when the Dodgers moved to Los Angeles, the Giants to San Francisco, the Braves to Atlanta, and the Athletics to Oakland) who kept their name and moved out west, the Browns opted to distance themselves from their lackluster past and adopt the name “Orioles” as they headed east to Maryland.
Reestablishing the Team in Baltimore
Once in Baltimore for the 1954 season, the Orioles slowly but surely began to establish themselves as a successful ballclub. And by 1966, the Baltimore Orioles had captured their first World Series Championship in franchise history.
In total, they have won three World Series titles and made 12 playoff appearances since becoming the Orioles. They have also been home to some of the greatest players the game has ever seen, including Brooks Robinson, Cal Ripken Jr., Frank Robinson, Eddie Murray, and Jim Palmer.

The team’s placement in the American League East Division jungle has them annually looking at tall trees in New York and Boston, competing with some of the wealthiest organizations in baseball, so their path to the postseason has been incredibly difficult compared to teams of equal talent in other divisions.
