In a state of flux for the last half decade, the Phoenix Coyotes are finally on firm ground in the desert. Just weeks before the 2013 preseason, a deal was finalized that transferred ownership to a group of highly successful businessmen with a passion for hockey. That’s very good news for fans of the Glendale, Arizona based team. A Brief History The Winnipeg Jets were founded in 1972 as a WHA franchise before entering the NHL in 1979. Though the Jets suited up hockey immortals like Bobby Hull and Dale Hawerchuck and enjoyed plenty of regular season success during their years in Manitoba, the team never advanced to a Stanley Cup Final and ultimately fell on financial hard times. Prior to the 1996 NHL season, with the help of one-time Phoenix Suns and Arizona Diamondbacks owner Jerry Colangelo the Winnipeg Jets moved south and became the Phoenix Coyotes. Since their arrival in Arizona, the Coyotes have qualified for the post-season 8 times, and been through a few ownership groups including one run by the Great One himself, Wayne Gretzky. The franchise’s greatest season came just two seasons ago (despite financial struggles that forced the NHL to take control of the team) when the Coyotes advanced all the way to the Western Conference Finals, before falling to the eventual Stanley Cup champions, the Los Angeles Kings. Last season, the Coyotes failed to qualify for the post-season and the situation appeared grave. But not anymore. A New Era in the Desert With new ownership finally in place that guarantees the Coyotes are in Phoenix for the long haul, it’s time to get back to the business at hand. It all starts with captain Shane Doan, a forward who’s been with the franchise since their days in Winnipeg. To bolster the offense, the Coyotes went out and got Mike Ribeiro is a huge get for the Phoenix Coyotes. With Doan on the wing, Ribeiro should become the first line center of what looks to be a vastly improved Phoenix offense. The Coyote defense is one of the best in the NHL. With Keith Yandle and young-gun Oliver Ekman-Larsson holding the opposition at bay, re-signed goaltender Mike Smith should have all the protection he needs to lead this team back to the playoffs.
