In a high-risk, high reward off-season deal, the Anaheim Ducks dealt a prolific scorer in Bobby Ryan in return for explosive young forwards Jakob Silfverberg and Stefan Noesen. With a talent infusion like that and the re-signing of superstars Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry, the Ducks are one of the most dangerous teams in the NHL.
A Brief History
Founded by the Walt Disney Company and named for the Emilio Estevez-starring film franchise, the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim came into the league in 1993 alongside the Florida Panthers. Though they’ve since changed ownership and been rebranded the Anaheim Ducks, the franchise of all-time greats like Paul Kariya, Teemu Selanne and Scott Niedermayer has become part of the sports fabric in Southern California. With one Stanley Cup victory in 2007 and another run to the finals four years earlier, the Ducks, like their rival LA Kings are set-up for success in the years to come.
Built to Compete
Outspoken (and endlessly entertaining) coach Bruce Boudreau technically begins his third season with the Ducks in 2013, but because he was hired mid-season his first year and dealt with a lockout in his second, THIS is his first real opportunity for him to put his stamp on the team. In Getzlaf and Perry, Boudreau knows he has two of the league’s very best, but if up-and-comers like Silfverberg, Emerson Etem and Kyle Palmieri continue to grow, the sky is the limit for the Ducks this season.
