When Kings Of Leon hit the airwaves with their 2008 multi-platinum album Only By The Night—which included rock anthems like “Sex On Fire” and “Use Somebody”—it almost felt like the quartet of good ole boys came out of nowhere. However, the Nashville gents had actually been touring around the world for almost a decade before America embraced their signature brand of Southern rock. England was the first to embrace the band and Kings Of Leon were almost immediately catapulted to star status when British audiences heard their 2003 debut, Youth & Young Manhood, anchored by songs like “Molly’s Chambers” and “California Waiting.”
Whatever success the band achieved abroad only grew greater with Only By The Night. However, after singer Caleb Followill famously walked off stage mid-set during a concert in Dallas in 2011, it was clear to everyone the band needed a break. (For those who love music documentaries, much of the tumult is actually captured in Talihina Sky: The Story Of Kings Of Leon, a 2011 film that documents the band’s rise to fame—and slight stumble from the top.) Looking back on the incident, Followill told Rolling Stone in 2013, “I just think my body quit on me and said, ‘You need to go away and rest.’” Rest they did, but the band recently released their sixth studio album, 2013’s Mechanical Bull, and are ready to rise once again.
