With her boho style and flair for introspective wordplay, Sara Bareilles has been writing music for the masses since her 2007 breakthrough, Little Voice, which boasted the anti-romantic ode, “Love Song,” which went on to sell 4 million copies. The song’s success is actually pretty funny, considering that the singer/songwriter wrote it simply to appease her record label, which at the time, wasn’t satisfied with the material she was recording. As she explained to CBS News, it was “kind of a nasty song, but it was very tongue-in-cheek, which is so me to be nasty in a passive-aggressive way!” For better or worse, the label actually loved it and the song went on to truly launch Barielles’ career.
The success of “Love Song”—and other hits like “Bottle It Up” and “King Of Anything”—opened Barielles up to a lot of amazing opportunities, including invitations to tour with bands like Counting Crows and Maroon 5. In 2011, she was also added as a celebrity judge on the third season of NBC’s The Sing-Off, alongside alt-pop singer Ben Folds and Boyz II Men’s Shawn Stockman. Though initially released in April 2013, Barielles is still riding high from the ongoing triumph of her hit single, “Brave,” which was co-written by fun. guitarist Jack Antonoff. “I think there’s so much honor and integrity and beauty in being able to be who you are,” Bareilles told The Advocate of the song’s message. “It’s important to be brave because by doing that you also give others permission to do the same.”
