Entering the NFL in 1995, the Jacksonville Jaguars are one of the newer franchises in the league, but the city of Jacksonville has a rich football tradition in large part due to the fact that the city has hosted the annual Florida-Georgia rivalry affectionately known as the “World's Greatest Outdoor Cocktail Party.”
After battling for decades to attract an NFL team to football-crazy north Florida, shoe mogul Wayne Weaver (owner of Nine West and Shoe Carnival) won the franchise in 1993. With Tom Coughlin (who would go on to win Super Bowls with the New York Giants installed as the franchise's first-ever coach, the Jacksonville Jaguars exploded out of the gate, making the playoffs an astonishing four out of five years.
New Owner
Since those halcyon days, the Jacksonville Jaguars returned to the playoffs twice during the Jack Del Rio era and in 2012 businessman Shahid Khan purchased the franchise from Weaver and his partners. With new ownership, a new logo and a new head coach for 2013, the Jaguars are primed for a return to contention.
With Maurice Jones-Drew back from injury and running over defenses and 2012 revelation Cecil Shorts III teaming up with 2012 #5 overall pick Justin Blackmon, the Jaguars have some of the best young offensive weapons in the NFL. University of Michigan QB Denard Robinson joins the assault in a “slash” role and if new coach Gus Bradley whips his defense into shape as expected, the Jacksonville Jaguars are going to surprise some people in 2013.
