Founded by iconic owner Lamar Hunt, the Kansas City Chiefs were a charter member of the American Football League in 1960 before the 1970 AFL-NFL merger. Playing their home games at Arrowhead Stadium (which boasts one of the top-rated tailgating experiences in all of football), the Chiefs won two AFL Championships (1962 and 1966) and defeated the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV.
A New Era Begins in 2013
After missing the playoffs five of the last six seasons, team owner Clark Hunt (son of Lamar Hunt) hired former Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid, one of the most respected coaches in the NFL. With Reid at the helm and former #1 overall pick Alex Smith brought in from the 49ers to run an offense loaded with weapons like Jamaal Charles, Dwayne Bowe and the electrifying Dexter McCluster, Kansas City looks to take over a wide open AFC West in 2013.
Though he's no longer the GM, one-time New England Patriots personnel chief Scott Pioli left the cupboards full of talent during his reign in Kansas City. With an aggressive young defense led by Dontari Poe and All-Pro Eric Berry, Andy Reid has all the pieces he needs to get the Kansas City Chiefs back to the playoffs.
Did You Know…
The name “Chiefs” was given to the team in honor of Kansas City Mayor Harold Bartle, who invited the franchise to move from Dallas to Missouri. Bartle was given the nickname during his professional role in the Boy Scouts, running a variety of leadership positions in the organization.
