Diana Ross is one of the most successful musical singers/producers of all time. Through her rise to fame with The Supremes, chart-topping solo career, and eventual stardom as a Broadway and film actor, Diana Ross reigns supreme as the preeminent female artist of the 20th century. In The Name of Love Born Diana Ernestine Earle Ross in Detroit, Michigan, Ross was only sixteen when she caught the attention of Motown Records CEO, Berry Gordy, while leading a vocal group by the name of “The Primettes”. By 1961 “The Primettes” had become “The Supremes” and for the remainder of the tumultuous 1960s, The Supremes ruled the Billboard charts. Between 1964 and 1967, the super group launched ten number one hit singles; their first being, “Where Did Our Love Go?” Touring with the Motor Town Revue, Ross’ ambition and immense talent motivated the Motown label to feature Ross as the lead singer, eventually changing the band name to “Diana Ross and The Supremes”. The rising fame of fellow Motown’s artists such as Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, The Marvelettes (“Please Mr. Postman”), Mary Wells, and The Tempations, thrust Motown Records into the pop culture mainstream, and “Diana Ross and The Supremes” led the way. Thanks to a series of number one hits like “Stop! In the Name of Love”, “Back In My Arms” and “I Hear A Symphony”, The Supremes skyrocketed in popularity and launched Diana Ross as a global sensation. Superstardom By 1968, rumors surfaced that Ross would be leaving her popular group, and though “Love Child” was yet another top single, Diana Ross and The Supremes final number one hit with The Supremes was “Someday We’ll Be Together” and she made her final appearance with the group on January 14, 1970. Diana Ross’ first solo singles were “Reach Out and Touch (Somebody’s Hand)” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” which was her first solo number one hit and it earned her the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Performance. What propelled Ross to toward critical acclaim as more than a musical artist was her performance as the legendary jazz singer, Billie Holiday, in her Academy Award nominated turn in Lady Sings The Blues (1972). Quickly returning to her musical career, Diana Ross was back atop the record charts with albums Touch Me in the Morning (1973), Love Hangover (1976), Baby It’s Me (1977) and Ross (1979). After the success of the internationally acclaimed duet with Lionel Richie, “Endless Love,” Ross became the first woman in music history to chart six number one hits. When combining her solo career and her time with The Supremes, Diana Ross achieved a staggering 18 number one hits; a number only surpassed by The Beatles (20 in the U.S. and 17 in the UK). With her 12 Grammy nominations, a Tony Award (“An Evening With Diana Ross”), a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in Lady Sings The Blues, Ross is one of few artists to have two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. A Living Legend One of the most influential talents in the history of music, Diana Ross helped blaze the trail followed by such immortals as Michael Jackson, Beyoncé Knowles and Rihanna among countless others.
