After more than 35 years under the stewardship of Hall of Fame coach Jim Boeheim, the Syracuse Orange enter the 2013-14 season as the new kid on the block in the vaunted ACC. A founding member and 10-time champion of the Big East, the Orange now get to face fellow powerhouses like Duke, North Carolina and Maryland on a routine basis.
A Legendary Basketball Program
Tallying the fifth most wins in Division I men’s basketball history and with a list of former Orange greats turned NBA stars like Rony Seikaly, Sherman Douglas, Derrick Coleman, Billy Owens and New York Knicks superstar Carmelo Anthony, the Syracuse Orange is one of the most celebrated brands in all of sports.
Since they first fielded a team way back in 1900, the Syracuse University Orange have spent well over 500 weeks on the Associated Press’s Top 25 poll. They’ve qualified for five Final Fours, with Boeheim leading them to four, including the school’s lone National Championship—a magical run behind a freshman sensation named Carmelo Anthony—in 2003.
With one national title, a signature, stifling zone defense and a consistent ability to recruit blue-chip players from around the country, Jim Boeheim is indisputably one of the greatest coaches in NCAA history.
A New Era Begins… In the ACC.
Following a magical swan song in the Big East tournament semi-final against historic rival Georgetown and a loss to the eventual National Champion Louisville Cardinals, the Syracuse Orange went on a sensational run all the way to the Final Four where they lost to the resurgent Michigan Wolverines.
Entering 2013, the Orange will have to replace floor leader Michael Carter-Williams who’s off to the NBA, but at Syracuse, Jim Boeheim doesn’t rebuilt, he reloads. CJ Fair is back for his senior year and looking to jump into the national player of the year conversation. Rakeem Christmas (who has to have the best name in basketball) and Dajuan Coleman will have to pick up their offensive games in order to replace the departed scorers, but with heralded freshman Tyler Ennis at the point, the Orange will look to make a statement in their new conference.
