The New York Mets, established in 1962 as an expansion team to fill the gap in the National League in New York left by the Brooklyn Dodgers’ and New York Giants’ departures to California, had a rough start in the MLB. They finished their first season with the worst record since the league started playing a 162-game season, and never finished better than second-to-last throughout their first seven years of play.
