Playing the majority of their home games under the brightest lights of all at Madison Square Garden, the St. John’s Red Storm are one of the most successful basketball programs in NCAA history. With more than 1700 wins in more than 100 years of competitive basketball, the Red Storm are the seventh-winningest program in the history of college basketball.
Historic Powerhouse
In the 1980s under Hall of Fame coach Lou Carnesecca, St. John’s was a perennial top 25 program that produced NBA talent like Jayson Williams, Mark Jackson (now coaching the Golden State Warriors) and Hall of Famer Chris Mullin. With a hard-nosed swagger that mirrored the mentality of the Big Apple, the St. John’s basketball brand was one of the most potent in the NCAA.
The Rise of the Red Storm
After several years out of tournament contention, former UCLA coach Steve Lavin stepped in to lead the program back to national prominence. In 2010, Lavin’s first year in Queens, the St. John’s amassed a 21-12 record that include six top 25 victories and resulted in the Red Storm’s first trip to the NCAA tournament since 2002. Following a season in which the Red Storm had finished 13th in the Big East, Lavin engineered one of the most impressive rebound seasons in NCAA history.
Since that 2010 success, the St. John’s Red Storm have been through an extensive rebuilding process. After fielding some of the youngest teams in the country, in 2013 Lavin finally has some veterans around to steer the ship on Broadway. With some of the top recruiting classes in the country over the last few years, St. John’s has legitimate Big Dance aspirations.
Big Games. Big Savings.
A charter member of the all-new, basketball-charged Big East Conference, St. John’s features a formidable combination of elite scorers and defensive dynamos.
